Canvas
A separate workspace that opens alongside the ChatGPT chat window, letting you edit text or code directly in place
In plain words
Canvas is a separate editing screen that opens next to the ChatGPT chat window. Normally, when you ask ChatGPT something, the answer piles up in the chat window one reply after another. But when Canvas opens, that answer moves into its own window where you can directly edit it by hand.
Think of the chat window as a letter you write on paper. Once a sentence is written, it's set; if you want to change it, you have to write a whole new letter. Canvas, on the other hand, is like a whiteboard. On the same board, you can erase and rewrite just one paragraph, or ask for just one line of code to be changed — instead of getting the whole thing rewritten, you see only that part updated right where it is.
This makes Canvas especially useful for working with long text or code. If you're drafting an essay and want to change the tone of just one paragraph, or you want just one function in a piece of code fixed, everything else stays untouched while only the requested part changes.
Try it yourself
Ask ChatGPT to write a long piece of text or some code, then add "write this in Canvas." Once the separate window opens, point to a specific paragraph or part of the code and ask something like "make just this part shorter" — you'll see that only that part changes, not the whole thing.
