Auto Continue
A feature that automatically resumes an AI task that stopped due to a usage limit, the instant the limit resets, without any human intervention.
In plain words
Auto Continue is a feature that picks up a task stopped by a usage limit and keeps going on its own, the moment the limit refills. Think of a rice cooker plugged into an outlet timer. It shuts off when its allotted power usage runs out, but once the set time arrives, it switches back on by itself and finishes cooking, no one needs to press the button again.
Previously, once a task hit a usage limit, it simply stayed stopped until a person noticed the limit had reset and manually pressed run again. Auto Continue removes that step of checking and restarting, letting the task resume automatically right when the limit resets.
Anthropic built this into the desktop app for its coding assistant, Claude Code. Even while a developer is asleep or working on something else, once the reset time passes, the task picks back up right from where it stopped.
How it shows up in the news
According to the article, on August 13 Anthropic added Auto Continue to the desktop app, letting work resume the instant a usage limit resets. It's easy to mistake this for a feature that raises the usage limit itself, but it doesn't. Once the limit is hit, the task still stops just the same. All it does is automatically restart at reset time, without a person needing to step in.
Try it yourself
Next time you're using Claude Code and a task stops because you hit a usage limit, don't manually restart it, just leave it and wait. After the reset time passes, check the screen again to see whether the task resumed on its own. That's the feature in action.
