Apache 2.0 License

The Apache 2.0 License is an open-use rule that lets anyone take software or an AI model, use it, modify it, and even make money from it.

Think of it as a completely public recipe book. Anyone can take the recipe and sell it as a menu item at their own restaurant, or change the ingredients to create a new dish. There's no need to call the original author for permission. There's just one courtesy you have to keep: don't erase the note in the original recipe that says who wrote it first.

There are many kinds of open-source licenses, and Apache 2.0 is one of the less restrictive ones. It doesn't require royalties for commercial use, and it includes provisions that protect users from patent disputes, which makes companies comfortable adopting it. That's part of why it's often chosen when releasing AI model weights.

In articles, it shows up when explaining the usage terms of a specific AI model, as in "Qwen3.8-27B... is a model whose weights are released under the Apache 2.0 License." A common misunderstanding is assuming that the word 'open source' means there are no conditions at all — in reality, there are minimal requirements like attribution or noting changes made. But because those conditions are so light, it's used to mean there's almost no legal hurdle for companies to build commercial services on top of it.

1. Look for the license notice on the page of an AI model or code repository you're interested in.
2. If it says Apache 2.0, you can understand that it's fine to use it commercially and to modify it with your own company's data.
3. When you actually distribute it, just make sure to keep the original copyright notice intact rather than removing it.
