Acqui-hire

An acquisition where a company buys another company mainly to gain its founders and core team, not its product or revenue.

In plain words

An acqui-hire happens when a company buys another company mostly to bring on board the founders and team members who built it, rather than for its product or sales. Think of a football club buying out a small lower-league club outright: what they're really after isn't the stadium or the merchandise revenue, but a handful of promising players who already play well together.

For a larger company, this can be faster than hiring people one by one. Bringing in a team that has already spent years tackling the same kinds of problems together saves the time it takes to build a new team and get everyone working smoothly. For the smaller company, it can also be a good move: if the larger company already has distribution or a user base that would have been hard to build alone, joining them can let their ideas reach far more people, much faster.

That said, the price of an acqui-hire is often small, or not disclosed at all. Since what's being bought is people rather than assets like factories or patents, it's hard to price the deal the way you would a typical acquisition based on revenue or asset value.

How it shows up in the news

An article might say "Gamma acquired Rica," but barely mention what product Rica actually built. Instead, it emphasizes that Rica's two co-founders will lead a new research team inside Gamma, and that the deal size wasn't disclosed. That's a signal the acquisition was about gaining the team's research capabilities rather than the business itself. It's easy to assume an acqui-hire means the company failed and was sold off cheap, but often it's a company that raised funding and was running normally, choosing this path to join forces with a company that has bigger distribution.
