AI is entering the work of intelligence analysts
Japanese AI startup Sakana AI has teamed up with the country's Ministry of Defense. The company announced on August 24 that it signed a contract with the ministry on July 29 covering "research and demonstration of AI capabilities needed for integrated analysis work." Under the deal, Sakana AI's AI agent technology will be applied to the work of intelligence analysts within the Defense Intelligence Headquarters.
The Japanese government has named "intelligence capability" as one pillar of strengthening its defense posture. As the security environment grows more complex, the volume of information to process has grown too, and using AI to speed up and sharpen collection, analysis, and management has become an urgent priority, according to the company.
What the trial actually covers
Sakana AI is running the trial along three tracks: making intelligence collection more efficient, boosting analytical capability, and building systematic information management. All three build on the company's AI agent technology, and the ultimate goal, as the company explains on its announcement page, is to embed AI functions reliable enough to actually support real decision-making.
How this differs from the March contract
This isn't Sakana AI's first contract in Japan's defense sector. Back in March, it won a research contract from the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency's Advanced Technology Institute for Defense Innovation, focused on foundational technology to upgrade command-and-control (C2) systems. That project centered on integrating information flowing in from individual units and sensors to enable faster, more accurate command decisions.
This new contract is a different kind of animal. Rather than command-and-control at the unit-operations level, it targets strategic intelligence work that underpins broader security policy. Sakana AI appears to be expanding its footprint in Japan's defense intelligence capabilities step by step — from decision-making on the ground to decision-making at the national policy level.
Hiring expands into the defense sector
Sakana AI is also growing its headcount to staff this area. The company says it's hiring across several roles, including software engineers, applied research engineers, cybersecurity engineers, project managers, and technical editors. It also stated that strengthening the country's security foundations with domestic AI technology is an urgent priority.

The trend of private AI startups moving into national defense and intelligence work isn't unique to Japan. Major U.S. AI labs have signed contracts with the Department of Defense, and the push to protect security infrastructure with domestic technology is happening in multiple countries at once. There are two things worth watching from the perspective of domestic (Korean) companies. If similar attempts emerge in Korea to apply AI agents to defense and security work, starting with a narrow-scope trial and expanding from there, as Sakana AI has done, would be the realistic approach.
Within the next few months, there's a good chance Sakana AI will use the results of this trial to land a third defense contract. If it delivers results in intelligence analysis, the next stage won't be another trial — it'll be actual deployment.
