The record came from an opening-ceremony exhibition match
On the evening of August 22, the opening ceremony of the second World Humanoid Robot Games was held at the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval. There, a humanoid built by Chinese robotics company Galbot (银河通用) played tennis against a human opponent. The next day, Galbot put out an English-language press release claiming "more than 100 consecutive autonomous rallies" and billing it as the "world's first autonomous humanoid tennis match."
Let's get the setting straight first. This wasn't an official event — it was a human-robot exhibition segment within the opening ceremony. The same segment also featured a table tennis match against Olympic champion Ding Ning and a soccer shooting contest. Tennis doesn't appear anywhere on the list of 51 official events at this year's Games.
The opponent was a former world No. 15
The human player was Zheng Jie. She reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 15 and made the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2008, becoming the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal. She retired from the tour after Wimbledon 2015.
There's a detail here that's easy to misread. Chinese media reported that "the serve speed reached over 100 km/h, leaving the robot only a fraction of a second to react" — but that serve was hit by Zheng Jie, not the robot. Galbot's own published specs for the robot say it "uses binocular vision to track balls arriving at over 50 km/h within 0.1 seconds." The 100 km/h figure describes what the robot had to handle, not what it was capable of producing.
Two different numbers from the same company — 100 vs. 20
This is the part worth paying closest attention to.
The English press release said "more than 100 consecutive rallies." But the same company's technical spec sheet, given to Chinese media, states "reliably performs more than 20 consecutive returns," with a 90.9% success rate on clean hits.

The two numbers aren't necessarily contradictory — "consecutive rallies" and "consecutive returns performed reliably" could be counting different things. But based on what's been released so far, there's no way to tell what each number is actually counting. This is something the company could clear up simply by defining what counts as a rally and disclosing how many times there was human intervention mid-match.
At one point during the match, the robot was pushed off balance side to side and fell backward. It got back on its feet within seconds. The fall itself isn't really the story — what matters is that it's still unclear how that fall was factored into the "100" count.
The robot on court had been unveiled just three days earlier
Chinese media coverage has confirmed the robot's identity: it was the Galbot ET1 (银河星仔), Galbot's first bipedal humanoid, standing roughly 1.75 meters tall. It was first shown publicly at the World Robot Conference (WRC 2026) in Beijing on August 19–20 — meaning it debuted just three days before the tennis match.
That matters because Galbot's actual commercial product is something else entirely. Its market-ready model, the G1, is a wheeled, legless dual-arm robot that isn't even built to fall over in the first place. In other words, this record reflects a demo performance by a robot that had only just been unveiled, not the performance of a commercial product. Galbot's English press release didn't name the model at all, so much of the English-language coverage simply repeated the numbers without knowing which robot produced them.
One more thing worth flagging: The Next Web suggested the robot might be a research prototype developed with Tsinghua University. That claim traces back to a single CGTN English-language article — it doesn't appear in Chinese coverage, and Galbot's academic ties are actually with Peking University and BAAI.
The official medal count is a separate story
Last year, at the first Games, Galbot won gold in the medicine-sorting event, finishing in 10 minutes 22 seconds with 336 points — 160 points ahead of second place — and completing the entire task autonomously while many of the 22 competing teams relied on remote operation. That was an official event, with scoring criteria and judges.
This year is different. As of August 24, the medal standings are led by Tiangong with 5 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze, and Zhiyuan with 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. There's no report yet of Galbot winning a medal in any official event. The Games run through August 26, so there are still two days left.
Who is Galbot
Galbot was founded in May 2023 by Peking University professor Wang He. The company deploys robots in warehouses and hospital pharmacies and operates more than 170 unmanned stores (银河太空舱) across roughly 40 Chinese cities. Its partners include CATL, Bosch, and Toyota.
Funding has come in fast. In December 2025, Galbot raised $300 million at a $3 billion valuation, then raised another 2.5 billion yuan in March 2026. That puts it among the highest-valued privately held robotics companies in China.
Editor's take
What this year's Games actually changed is that autonomy now gets scored. Performances achieved through remote operation count for only half the points of an autonomous performance. In other words, autonomy is directly tied to the scoreboard — which is exactly why any claim of autonomy needs to be verifiable.
But this tennis match happened somewhere that verification couldn't reach. It wasn't an official event, just an opening-ceremony demo, so there's no scoresheet and no judges' record. All that's left is the company's statement and the footage — and footage alone can't tell you whether something was autonomous or remotely operated.
When you read any robotics announcement, there are really only two things worth checking: which robot it was, and who did the counting. Galbot's medicine-sorting gold last year had both answers. This tennis record has one — we know the robot — but the counting method is still an open question. If the company discloses how it defines a rally and how many interventions occurred, this record would stand on much firmer ground than it does today.
