Solaris

Solaris is a program from Runway that doesn't prepare screens in advance with pre-written code. Instead, every time a user clicks or drags something, it draws the resulting screen in real time.

Think of it this way: a typical app is like a picture book with pages already drawn, and pressing a button just flips to the matching pre-made page. Solaris works the opposite way — every time you press a button, it's as if a painter is drawing the next scene on the spot. So pressing the same button can produce a different screen depending on the situation.

Runway explains that this approach takes technology originally used by AI video models to predict and draw the next frame, and applies it directly to the screen itself. A user's click isn't a command telling the computer what to do — it's a signal telling the painter how to draw the next scene. Runway says Solaris outperforms several large language models at generating new screens, and suggests it could also be used to help AI agents learn how to operate interfaces in the future.

Articles describe it with lines like "Solaris reportedly outperforms frontier LLMs." But it's important not to confuse Solaris with a language model that generates text or conversation — it's a program that renders the interface (screen) itself in real time. It's also currently only accepting early access applications, with no official release date announced yet.
