A software factory is a development system that, like an assembly line in a car factory, breaks the whole process of building software into stages and handles each stage in a defined way. Just as a car factory moves through welding, painting, and assembly in sequence, software goes through requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, security checks, deployment, and ongoing monitoring.

There's a common misunderstanding here, though. It's easy to think that having AI write code for you is what makes development faster, but writing code is only one part of the whole process. The rest involves deciding what to build, verifying that it actually works, releasing it safely into the world, and watching to make sure it keeps running without problems. A software factory refers to placing AI tools across this entire process, so people can focus on judgment and review while automated workflows handle the repetitive execution.

Bringing a system like this into a company takes more than installing a single tool. It requires training teams, setting up security and governance rules, and connecting everything to existing systems—which is why consulting firms or system integrators often step in to help with the rollout.

In the article, this term is used when the dev-tool startup Factory AI announces it is putting $100 million into a partner program to help companies "adopt software factories." It's worth noting that here, software factory isn't the name of a specific product—it refers to the overall way a company applies AI across its entire development process. Buying a single code-generation tool and building a software factory are two different things.
