Shopping Agent

A Shopping Agent is an AI program that, when a person says something like "find me this kind of product," searches on their behalf, compares several options on screen, and fills the cart. Think of it like a department store concierge: you tell the staff what you're looking for, they walk the floor, find items, compare prices and stock, and report back—but you're the one who swipes your card at the register.

This role pairs with a Merchant Agent working on the store's side. If the Shopping Agent faces the customer, the Merchant Agent analyzes sales and manages inventory and pricing. Neither one actually executes real payments or price changes on its own—the recent trend is to design things so a human has to press the final button to confirm.

Pushing the concierge analogy further: this staff member doesn't hand you off to a different desk depending on your request. One person carries the conversation from start to finish, pulling out folders as needed—search, product research, response manuals, and the like.

Reports note that "Anthropic open-sourced the implementation code for both a customer-facing Shopping Agent and a store-running Merchant Agent." It's easy to assume this means payment happens automatically too, but in practice it stops at filling the cart and showing "not yet paid" on screen. The final payment still requires a human to press the button in the app.

You can try mimicking what a Shopping Agent does by asking a chatbot something like this:

"I want to buy wireless earbuds in the $40 range. Compare three products in a table based on battery life and water resistance. Once I pick one, list what should go into the cart."

It helps to notice that the chatbot doesn't actually log into a real store and buy anything—it stops at organizing information and guiding you to the next step.
