Sessionless MCP

Sessionless MCP is a way of connecting AI to outside tools or data that doesn't require the server to keep remembering and holding onto that connection.

A restaurant analogy makes this easier to understand. The original way was like having one waiter assigned to a customer from start to finish, keeping the order details and conversation flow in their head the whole time. Even if you hire more waiters, each customer is tied to a specific one, so it's hard to distribute the work flexibly. The sessionless approach is more like writing everything needed on a note and handing it over with each order, so that any waiter can just read the note and handle it right away. Since waiters don't need to remember individual customers, you can easily add more waiters when things get busy.

In computing terms, this is called being stateless, and because of it, running multiple servers at once to increase throughput is called horizontal scaling. When traffic surges, you can simply spin up another server, which makes operations much simpler.

In articles, this shows up in phrasing like "servers can now scale horizontally without holding state." A common misunderstanding is that this does not mean the AI model itself can't remember conversations. Rather, it refers to a technical shift at the level of MCP, the communication standard that connects AI to tools and data: the server no longer needs to keep holding onto connection state.
