Scheduled Tasks

A feature that lets you hand off work to AI in advance, to run once, repeat on a schedule, trigger on a specific event, or watch for changes.

In plain words

Scheduled Tasks let you tell an AI in advance, "do this thing at this time," much like setting a morning alarm or asking someone to let you know when something happens.

There are broadly four ways to set these up: running something just once, repeating it on a schedule like every Monday, triggering it when a specific event occurs (such as an email arriving), or continuously watching for changes in some data or situation. For example, if someone writes the same kind of document in the same format every day, the AI might notice the pattern and ask, "Should I set this up as a scheduled task?"

What matters is that the final decision to actually run the task still rests with the person. The system is designed so users choose what the AI can access and when it should check in with them before acting.

How it shows up in the news

The article gives an example where ChatGPT proactively suggests, "Should I run this automatically at this time every week?" A common misunderstanding is that Scheduled Tasks let AI decide and execute anything on its own; in fact, the person chooses the trigger conditions and how the task runs when setting it up.

Try it yourself

Try this in an AI chatbot that supports scheduled tasks.

  1. Type: "Every Monday at 9 AM, summarize the list of issues handled last week."
  2. Answer any follow-up questions the AI asks about the recurrence and how it should run.
  3. Check whether you can edit or turn off the task anytime from the list of scheduled tasks.

You can also try an event-based version, such as: "When an email from a specific client's name arrives in my inbox, summarize it and let me know."
