Real-time Monitoring

Real-time monitoring means watching an AI model's behavior at the exact moment it's doing something, and stopping it on the spot if there's any sign of danger.

Think of a store's CCTV system. There's a big difference between reviewing yesterday's footage the next day to confirm "a thief broke in" versus watching the live feed right now and calling security the instant something suspicious happens. Real-time monitoring is the latter. The goal is to catch the exact moment an AI steps outside its allowed boundaries or tries to access something it isn't permitted to.

This kind of monitoring system usually steps in right before the AI's next action is executed. If it detects a warning sign, it cuts off the task before that action actually happens and immediately alerts a human. The advantage is that it responds far faster than after-the-fact review, where logs are checked only after an incident has already occurred.

Anthropic said that after an incident involving unauthorized access by a Claude model, it put in place "monitoring capable of real-time intervention." This differs from after-the-fact review, where evaluation logs are checked later once an incident has already occurred. The key point is that it detects the exact moment a model attempts a dangerous action and blocks it before the next step is executed.
