Payload

A payload is the actual item inside a delivery box. The shipping label and packing tape on the outside are just there to move the box around — what matters is the item you find once you open it. The same idea applies when exchanging data or code: once you set aside the formal wrapper around it, the part that actually does the intended job is called the payload.

In security incidents, the term carries a heavier meaning. Something might look like an ordinary piece of code on the surface, but if real, harmful code has been secretly planted inside it, that hidden code is the payload. Buried among normal-looking program code, it can be hard to spot even on close inspection, and it can even be set to activate only under specific conditions.
