GLM-5.3
An open-weight large AI model released by Zhipu AI in August 2026, built with particular strength in coding and cybersecurity tasks.
In plain words
GLM-5.3 is a large AI model made by the Chinese AI company Zhipu AI. Its defining feature is that the finished model's "brain file" is released as a whole, so anyone can download it and run or modify it on their own computer or server. It has been specifically tuned to excel at writing code and finding security vulnerabilities.
You can compare this to handing out the complete blueprint for a lock. Defenders who get the blueprint can cheaply check their own locks and fix weaknesses in advance, but the same blueprint could let someone with bad intentions make a key to break in. That's why Zhipu AI didn't release GLM-5.3's blueprint all at once — instead, it had security partners verify the model first, then rolled out access in stages.
This staged release approach stands out. Open-weight models are usually released fully open the moment they're announced, but GLM-5.3 instead followed the kind of staged disclosure process that large, established AI labs use when checking a model for dangerous capabilities.
How it shows up in the news
In articles, you'll see phrasing like "Z.ai released GLM-5.3, an open-weight model for automating coding and cybersecurity tasks." One easy point of confusion: GLM-5.3 wasn't built by an independent company called Z.ai — it was built by Zhipu AI. Z.ai is simply the service brand that Zhipu AI operates; Zhipu AI is the actual developer.
Try it yourself
If you have access to GLM-5.3 through an API or a service that offers it, you can try a code-review prompt like the one below.
Find the security vulnerabilities in the following code and list them. For each vulnerability, note the severity and how to fix it.
