Financial Stability Board
An international body where financial authorities from around the world coordinate on risks to the global financial system and issue policy recommendations to the G20.
In plain words
The Financial Stability Board is an international forum set up by financial authorities from countries around the world. If a bank or securities firm runs into trouble within a single country, that country's own financial regulator steps in. But when a problem can spread across borders into banks and markets in multiple countries, that's a different story. This is exactly the situation the Board exists for: it's where central banks and finance ministries from different countries share information in advance and work out a coordinated response. It has no power to enforce laws, but because it sits in a position to bring policy recommendations to the G20 summit, many countries actually draw on its recommendations when shaping their own regulations.
What stands out recently is that the Board has started talking about AI. Alongside traditional financial risks like a banking system collapse or turmoil in government bond markets, it has now put on its agenda the cyberattack risks that cutting-edge AI models could create. The concern is that if many financial institutions all depend on a handful of AI technology providers, a problem at just one of those providers could cascade like dominoes through the entire financial system.
How it shows up in the news
An article may state that 'the Governor of the Bank of England sent a letter to the G20,' but strictly speaking, he wrote it in his capacity as Chair of the Financial Stability Board. The head of the Bank of England and the Chair of this Board happen to be the same person right now, but the two are separate roles — worth keeping straight.
