Emergence

As models get bigger, abilities that were completely absent in smaller models — translation, arithmetic, reasoning — suddenly appear at some threshold of scale. Skills no one taught the model "emerge" from sheer size.

It's the same logic as a single ant being simple, while an ant colony can build bridges. This is where all the wonder and unease around AI comes from — it means even the companies building these models don't know exactly what abilities will pop up in the next one.
