Defender's Window

The Defender's Window is the gap between how long it takes an attacker to find and exploit a weakness in a system, and how long it takes a defender to find and fix that same weakness first. It's like a hole in your backyard fence — there's a window of time before a burglar notices it, during which the homeowner could patch it up. If that window is wide, defenders have the advantage; if it narrows, attackers do.

The problem is that AI can dramatically speed up how fast attackers find vulnerabilities. This hits especially hard for organizations running old systems with little cybersecurity staff or budget — water and sewage utilities, power grids, small local governments, community banks. These groups already have a narrow window, since there are many holes to plug but few people to plug them. On the flip side, if defenders also use AI to find and fix vulnerabilities faster, they can keep that narrowing window open.
