Custom Node

A custom node is a functional block in image or video generation software that wasn't there when you first installed the program, but was later obtained and added separately. When you first install a cooking app, it comes with only basic knives and pots; a custom node is like buying someone else's special mandoline slicer or sous vide cooker and adding it to your kitchen drawer.

The problem shows up when you receive a recipe someone else wrote. If that recipe assumes a special tool that isn't in your drawer, you'll get stuck partway through following it. When you open someone else's workflow file in image or video generation software and something shows up in red or won't run, this is usually why — a tool that existed in the drawer of the person who made that recipe simply isn't in yours.

Recently, a method has appeared where an AI agent checks inside this drawer in advance. Before assigning a task, it first checks which custom nodes are installed in your program, and builds the recipe using only the tools you already have, instead of one that calls for tools you don't have.

The article states that "the agent looks at every installed node, including custom nodes, as well as the list of models on disk." Here, a custom node isn't a program error or bug — it's a normal extension that a user added later to fit their own needs. A common reason workflows break is that this extension differs from one person's installation environment to another's.

If you're using image or video generation software, try opening a workflow file someone else has shared. Before running it, check whether any block on screen is marked with a red outline or warning. If so, that's a custom node missing from your installation, and the workflow won't run properly without installing it separately.
