Context as a variable is a design approach in which an AI agent treats its accumulated conversation and task history not as fixed storage, but as a value that a program can freely read, edit, or delete.

To use an analogy, an ordinary AI is like a notepad that only ever gets written onto continuously. The longer a conversation runs, the thicker the notepad gets, and the model has to reread it from start to finish every time, which drives up both time and cost. Context as a variable is the approach of treating that notepad more like a drawer — something you can summarize, trim unnecessary parts from, or swap out entirely whenever needed.

The idea is that this can reduce the problem of long-running autonomous agents becoming slower and more expensive as their history piles up without limit. That said, this concept was introduced by Prime Intellect as one of the design elements of its agent execution environment, Prime Agent, and specifics on what criteria are used to edit the context or how much efficiency is actually gained have not yet been disclosed in detail.
