Bluetooth Signal Strength

A measure of how strong the wireless signal is between two Bluetooth-connected devices, which changes with distance and obstacles

In plain words

Bluetooth signal strength is a value that shows how clear and stable a wireless connection is when a device like earbuds or a smartwatch links up with a smartphone. Think of two people talking in a room: standing close, their voices come through clearly, but moving apart or having a wall in between makes the sound cut out or become hard to hear. Bluetooth signal strength works the same way — it's strong when devices are close together, and weakens with distance or obstacles like walls or a bag.

When this value drops, you get problems like music cutting out, a smartwatch losing its connection to the phone, or a wireless keyboard's input lagging. Conversely, when the signal is strong enough, the two devices exchange information frequently and work smoothly together. Recently, this signal strength has also been used to estimate the rough distance between devices — for example, turning on a certain feature only when the phone is nearby.

Try it yourself

Connect earbuds or a speaker to your phone via Bluetooth, then slowly walk to another room while holding the device. Find the point where the sound cuts out or lags — that spot marks the boundary where the signal starts to weaken. Try the same test with a wall in between to feel how much of an effect an obstacle has on the signal.
