AI Chatbot

An AI program that exchanges text messages with people, answering questions or playing the role of a conversation partner.

In plain words

An AI chatbot is a program that trades written messages with a person. Type something into the box and it writes back right away, even chiming in on small talk — like an always-on customer service rep.

But the chatbot doesn't actually understand what you said or feel anything when it replies. It has already read a huge amount of text beforehand, and it picks out whatever sentence is likely to come next after your message and stitches it in. It's a bit like a ghostwriter who has memorized a giant pile of letters and their replies, and who, upon seeing a new letter, imitates a reply that fits a similar situation. A comforting or friendly tone is just an imitation too — it doesn't come from an actual wish to comfort someone.

Recently this function has expanded beyond simple Q&A into taking on roles like a friend or romantic partner. Because the conversation flows smoothly and responses come instantly, it can easily feel like a real relationship — but critics point out that a similar format doesn't mean the content is the same.

How it shows up in the news

In the article it appears as: "Meta has expanded features that let people use AI chatbots as friends or romantic partners across its apps." A common misunderstanding here is thinking the chatbot actually likes the person or forms a relationship. The chatbot simply picks out whatever sentence fits based on conversation patterns it learned beforehand — it doesn't have feelings or ongoing interest in anyone.

Try it yourself

Open any AI chatbot window and type, "I'm feeling down today, comfort me." When you get a reply, ask yourself whether it really speaks to your specific situation, or whether it's just assembling common comforting phrases used in similar situations. Then send the exact same message two or three more times and compare how similar the replies are — this will give you a more concrete feel for how a chatbot actually works.
