Agent Plugins
An open standard for packaging plugins so they can be built once and used across multiple AI agent tools
In plain words
Agent Plugins is a packaging standard that lets an extension work the same way across AI coding tools from different companies. Just like a smartphone app can be built once and installed on phones from different makers, the goal here is for a developer to build a feature once and have it installable on any AI agent program that supports the standard.
OpenAI announced that it developed this standard together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the code editor Cursor, the code repository GitHub, and the deployment platform Vercel, among others. The key point is that this isn't a rule set by one company alone, but a common format multiple companies agreed on together. The format can bundle together the tasks an agent is capable of (skills) along with the configuration needed to connect to external tools.
Until now, each company shipped its own style of extensions, meaning the same feature often had to be rebuilt separately for each tool. Agent Plugins can be seen as an industry-wide attempt to reduce this duplicated work.
How it shows up in the news
OpenAI's developer account introduced the standard with the line: "Build a plugin once and use it across compatible agent clients." MiniMax also stated that its coding tool, MiniMax Code, supports this standard from launch.
A common misconception is that this is OpenAI's own proprietary feature. In reality, it's an open standard built jointly by multiple companies including AWS, Cursor, GitHub, and Vercel, and detailed technical documentation and a full list of supporting clients have not yet been published.
Try it yourself
Check the settings menu of the AI coding tool or agent program you currently use to see if there's a 'plugins' or 'extensions' list. If an item mentions the Agent Plugins standard, that means the tool shares the same kind of extensions with other agent clients.
