Nous Research's Hermes is an AI agent that gets smarter the more you use it
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research that builds and improves its own skills over time and keeps a growing model of who you are across sessions. You can talk to it from a terminal, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, or Signal, and switch between any LLM provider — OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, or your own endpoint — with a single command. It runs on anything from a $5 VPS to a GPU cluster to serverless infrastructure that costs almost nothing while idle.

What it does
- It has a built-in learning loop: it creates skills from experience, improves them during use, searches past conversations, and builds a deepening model of the user across sessions
- Beyond a full terminal chat interface (TUI), it runs across Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, and Signal through a single gateway process, so conversations continue across platforms
- It supports seven terminal backends — local, Docker, SSH, Singularity, Modal, Daytona, and Vercel Sandbox — so it can keep working on a cloud machine instead of just your laptop
- A built-in cron scheduler runs natural-language automations like daily reports or nightly backups unattended, and it can spawn isolated subagents to parallelize work
- The `hermes model` command lets you switch among 300+ models from Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and others without changing any code
Why it matters
For anyone who wants a personal AI assistant that remembers context and habits across sessions instead of starting from scratch every time, this offers a working setup rather than a concept. Because it isn't locked to one model provider, it lets developers build agent infrastructure without vendor lock-in.
