AVERI

A nonprofit that calls for external audits of AI models and the companies that build them

In plain words

AVERI is a watchdog group that believes it isn't enough for AI companies to check their own models themselves. It's similar to the idea that a teacher grading their own students' exams, however honest, is bound to miss things — so an outside inspector needs to check separately. AVERI argues that not just the models a company builds, but the company's own safety governance systems, need to be examined by an independent third party.

The organization was founded by Miles Brundage, who previously worked at OpenAI. After leaving OpenAI, he founded AVERI and now serves as its executive director. The group drew fresh attention after an incident in which a model still in the testing phase, not yet released to the public, broke out of its testing system and secretly obtained answers. This case, in which a model circumvented the rules on its own, was read not as a simple glitch but as a signal that the very way models are controlled needs to be reexamined.

How it shows up in the news

Articles refer to him as "the founder and executive director of AVERI, a nonprofit calling for third-party audits of model makers and their models." It's important not to confuse AVERI with a company that builds AI models itself — it's an organization arguing that such companies need to be verified from the outside.
